Accuplacer for Nursing School: Scores, Sections & Practice

Your nursing program may use Accuplacer to decide course placement after admission. Here’s exactly what scores nursing schools look for, which sections matter most, and how to prepare so you skip remedial coursework.

What is Accuplacer in the nursing context?

Accuplacer is a College Board placement test used by US community colleges and many nursing programs after admission to decide which math, reading, and writing courses you start in. Score high enough on each section and you skip remedial classes — saving time, tuition, and a delayed start to your nursing coursework. Score below the program’s threshold and you’re placed in developmental classes that must be completed before nursing-specific courses begin.

Which Accuplacer Sections Matter Most for Nursing Students?

Accuplacer Next-Generation includes Reading, Writing, Quantitative Reasoning (Algebra & Statistics), Arithmetic, and Advanced Algebra & Functions. Not all sections carry equal weight for nursing placement.

Highest priority

Quantitative Reasoning & Arithmetic

Direct relevance to dosage calculation, IV drip rates, and medication math. Nursing programs typically require the highest placement score here.

High priority

Reading

Nursing coursework involves dense textbook reading, NCLEX-style stems, and research articles. Reading placement determines whether you start in college-level or remedial reading.

Medium priority

Writing

Care-plan documentation, charting, and capstone papers all rely on college-level writing. Most programs want a solid writing placement but treat it as secondary to math/reading.

Conditional

Advanced Algebra & Functions

Required only for BSN tracks that use statistics for nursing research. ADN/LPN programs often skip this section.

Accuplacer Scores Nursing Schools Look For

Accuplacer Next-Generation sections are scored 200–300. Each school sets its own cut scores, but typical college-level placement (i.e., skipping remedial coursework) lands in these ranges:

Section Score Range College-Level Placement Nursing-Competitive
Reading200–300250+260+
Writing200–300250+260+
Arithmetic200–300245+260+
Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra & Stats200–300250+265+
Advanced Algebra & Functions200–300245+ (if required)260+

Cut scores vary by program. Always check your nursing school’s placement chart. A "competitive" score for nursing means you skip remediation in math and reading — the two sections that delay nursing-course enrollment most often.

Accuplacer Next-Generation vs Classic Accuplacer

Since 2019, most US colleges — including the majority of nursing programs — have moved to Accuplacer Next-Generation. The legacy "Classic" Accuplacer is largely retired. If your school still uses Classic, scoring works on a 20–120 scale instead of 200–300.

Your Roadmap: Admission → Accuplacer → Nursing Courses

Four stages from acceptance letter to your first nursing course.

1

Get Accepted

Pass your nursing entrance exam (TEAS, HESI A2, or NLN NEX) and submit your application.

2

Practice Accuplacer

Focus on math and reading — the sections that decide whether you start in nursing prerequisites or remedial classes.

3

Sit Accuplacer

Most programs let you retake. Aim for 250+ on Reading and 250+ on Quantitative Reasoning to skip remediation.

4

Start Nursing Courses

Strong scores mean you go straight into prerequisites and on to RN or LPN coursework.

Accuplacer for Nursing: Common Questions

Cut scores vary by program, but for nursing placement most schools want at least 250 on Reading and 245–250 on Quantitative Reasoning or Arithmetic on the Next-Generation 200–300 scale. Scores below that typically place you in remedial coursework before you can start nursing prerequisites.

Accuplacer tests general high-school-level math, reading, and writing — not nursing-specific content. Most nursing applicants who recently passed the TEAS or HESI A2 find Accuplacer manageable, but the Quantitative Reasoning section can surprise people who haven’t reviewed algebra in years. Two to four weeks of focused practice is typically enough.

No. Many BSN programs use SAT/ACT scores or college transcripts instead. Accuplacer is most common at community-college ADN and LPN programs and some BSN programs without standardized-test requirements. Some programs waive Accuplacer if you have qualifying transferable college credit.

Usually yes — retake policy is set by each school. Many nursing programs allow one or two retakes with a waiting period (often 24–72 hours) and may require evidence of additional study or a brushup course. Always check your specific program’s retake rules before sitting Accuplacer the first time.

Plan on two to four weeks of focused practice if you already passed a nursing entrance exam recently. If math hasn’t been part of your daily life for years, six to eight weeks is more realistic. Diagnose with a full-length practice test, then drill the section that’s holding back your nursing placement.

No. TEAS and HESI A2 are nursing-specific entrance exams used to decide who gets admitted to the program. Accuplacer is a general placement test used after admission to decide which level of math, reading, and writing courses you start in. Many nursing applicants take both.
